Summit Introduction: Mr. C.Y. Huang’s Welcome

Honorary Guest Mr. Sean C. Chen of the Executive Yuan, Honorary Guest Economic Minister Dr. Yen-Shiang Shih, Ladies and Gentlemen, good day everyone. I welcome everyone, on this Monday following the typhoon, to this year’s 2nd annual “2010 MAPECT M&A and Private Equity Summit.” Time really flies by. It has been one year. I still remember last year, around September, we were also here, hosting this event.

This Council was established last year in September. And I remember during its founding, we had specifically invited Honorary Guest Mr. Chen of the Executive Yuan to give his support. In this short period of one year, the growth and development of MAPECT has been extremely expedient. And the pace of the Council’s growth and that of the development of Cross-strait relations have been parallel. Here today, I am personally deeply moved. On one hand, both sides of the Taiwan Strait have finally signed the progressive ECFA (Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement). For Taiwan, I believe that ECFA is a milestone. Not only does it improve Cross-strait relations, but it also, more importantly, once again places Taiwan on the global arena, allowing Taiwan to build new relations with countries and organizations around the world. And our government has been pushing an “Invest in Taiwan” policy (via the Council for Economic Planning and Development); I believe this is a very correct policy. Especially for foreign capital, Chinese capital, and Taiwanese capital, this policy comes just in time.

One of MAPECT’s principle missions is to improve, on one hand, cross-strait exchange, and on the other hand, the bridge that links Taiwan with the rest of the world. At today’s day-long Summit, there are numerous topics that we will address, including cross-strait M&A and investment activities, cross-strait industry funds, the internationalization of Taiwanese companies, and the future of TDR. Moreover, our guests from China will share their views about establishing and developing a company in China. I believe these are all very important topics that we will analyze and discuss today.

I am also very moved by the fact that our event will continue despite all of the challenges and setbacks. For the past two days, our workers have been working extremely hard – as the organizing process for this event has been very long – to work on the setbacks; we have a few guests, who because of the typhoon, could not land at Taoyuan airport. So they had to change their flights to this morning to come here. This demonstrates the tremendous importance that everyone has placed on this event. What else is moving is the fact that Honorary Guests Mr. Sean C. Chen of the Executive Yuan and Honorary Guest Economic Minister Dr. Yen-Shiang Shih still have to hurry down to Southern Taiwan later today to help with those affected by the typhoon. Everyone knows that the typhoon has caused a lot of problems that require attention. So I am very honored to have both of their support of this event. I represent MAPECT and every guest in attendance today in expressing our most sincerely appreciation.

I believe that today, when discussing these topics, our fundamental focus will be how we can expand Taiwanese businesses to China and to the world. I feel like Taiwan needs to address these issues in order to achieve this.
